Designing A Custom Access Platform With Roof Access Ladder
Rooftop Support Systems recently had the opportunity to design and implement a custom access platform for a customer based in Baltimore. The intention behind the access platform was to provide maintenance crews with safe and easy access to service air handlers for the building. The surrounding area was narrow and had several obstacles we had to design around. The air handlers were located several feet off the ground, so a fixed ladder had to be included in the design. The platform was constructed primarily from Sikla structural framing products, which are known for their modularity and efficiency. Let’s take a closer look at the construction of the platform, and the factors that went into it’s unique design.
What Is A Fixed Ladder?
A fixed ladder is a permanently attached, non-movable ladder designed for safe and stable vertical access to elevated areas, such as rooftops or mezzanines. In custom rooftop access platforms, fixed ladders ans stairs are a key components, used to provide workers with a secure means to reach equipment for maintenance and servicing. Access ladders are often integrated with safety features like cages, grab bars, and self-closing gates to prevent falls. They are strategically positioned alongside platforms to ensure easy and efficient access while complying with OSHA and ANSI safety standards.
For our project, we decided to utilize a fixed ladder instead of a staircase due to the congested space surrounding the air handlers. A staircase would have taken up significantly more space. The air handlers were permanently affixed to their location, so a permanently fixed ladder was necessary. By incorporating fixed ladders into rooftop access solutions, facilities can enhance worker safety, improve accessibility, and streamline equipment servicing operations.
What Is An Air Handler In HVAC Terms?
An air handler in HVAC systems is a crucial component responsible for circulating and regulating air within a building. It typically contains a blower, heating or cooling elements, filters, and dampers to condition and distribute air efficiently. Air handlers are often installed on rooftops, especially in commercial and industrial settings, to save indoor space and optimize airflow.
However, their elevated placement makes routine maintenance and repairs challenging, which is why custom rooftop access platforms are essential. These platforms provide a stable, OSHA-compliant work area, ensuring technicians can safely access and service air handlers without the risks associated with moveable ladders or unstable footing. Proper access not only enhances worker safety but also improves maintenance efficiency, leading to better HVAC performance and longevity.
The access doors for the air handlers on our job site were located several feet off the ground and were in close proximity to other rooftop equipment which posed a significant challenge. A custom access platform with a fixed ladder was essential for providing safe access to maintenance workers while they service the equipment.
Choosing The Right Materials For Custom Roof Platforms
We chose Sikla siFramo Structural Framing products for the construction of our custom rooftop access platform because of their strength and versatility. Modular framing systems allow for fast, efficient, and secure assembly. Sikla’s high-quality components are designed for structural reliability while minimizing weight, making them an ideal choice for rooftop applications where load constraints are a concern. Their pre-engineered, bolt-together system eliminates the need for on-site welding, significantly reducing installation time and labor costs.
Additionally, Sikla’s reputation for durability and compliance with industry safety standards ensures that our access platform provides long-term stability and protection for workers servicing rooftop equipment. With Sikla, we can deliver a custom solution that is both safe and easy to install, making them a trusted choice in the industry.
Our custom ladder access platform also made use of Unistrut channel, fittings and hardware for the safety hand railings. The Unistrut metal framing system provides a highly versatile and adaptable set of building materials that is compatible with Sikla, cost effective, and efficient to install.
Grip Strut Metal Safety Grating was utilized for all platform walking surfaces to provide safe, anti-slip footing. The Grip Strut diamond hole pattern also allows for dirt, debris, ice, snow, and rain to pass through so build up does not occur and obstruct safe pathways. It also improves air flow circulation around the unit.
100% Recycled Rubber Bases help disperse system weight over a greater surface area. Rubber bases are also non-penetrating, so they provide stability that won’t damage your rooftop over the course of the platforms’ lifetime.
